DFEEST undertake a range of functions in order to contribute to the objectives and targets of South Australia's Strategic Plan, including:
- providing strategic policy advice for developing the state's workforce
- providing strategic advice for science, technology, information economy and innovation policy to link government with business, industry and education sectors
- ensuring high quality vocational education and training (VET) delivered by TAFE SA Institutes, private registered training organisations and adult community education providers
- regulating VET organisations, university and non-university higher education providers, and providers of English language intensive courses for overseas students
- regulating, administration and funding of apprenticeships and traineeships
- managing state funded employment and community development programs
- supporting the Government of South Australia's strategic direction in the higher education sector
- initiating, advocating and facilitating policies and strategies, including appropriate programs and grants, that create positive outcomes for young people in South Australia
- supporting the implementation of the Youth Action Plan
- raising the profile of South Australia in the international education market place through its support of Education Adelaide.
