Building Family Opportunities

Connecting long-term jobless families to employment

Building Family Opportunities is a program that aims to break the cycle of intergenerational joblessness. It brings together long-term jobless families, local community organisations, government, businesses and employers to find solutions to issues that prevent families from participating in employment and getting ahead.

Building Family Opportunities will provide intensive support to 465 families across the local government areas of Playford, Port Augusta and Port Adelaide Enfield and some suburbs located within the City of Charles Sturt. The program is a Social Inclusion initiative delivered by the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology.

Building Family Opportunities uses a 'life first' approach that harnesses family strengths to address challenges and build the necessary confidence and skills to succeed in education, training and ultimately, sustainable employment.

To be considered for participation in Building Family Opportunities a family must:

  • reside in one of the three local government areas of Playford, Port Augusta, or Port Adelaide Enfield or in the City of Charles Sturt suburbs of Albert Park, Athol Park, Kilkenny, Royal Park, Seaton, Woodville, Woodville North and Woodville South; and
  • have a principal job seeker who has been jobless for a period of 12 months or more; and who has been eligible for full income support in the previous 12 months; and
  • include dependents up to 24 years of age for whom parents have caring responsibilities.

Government and non-government agencies working with vulnerable families are encouraged to refer them to the program.

Once in the program intensive support will be provided to families through:

  • Building Family Opportunities Program: Centrecare Catholic Family Services for Playford
  • Building Family Opportunities Program: UnitingCare Wesley Port Pirie for Port Augusta
  • Building Family Opportunities Program; a Family Centred Employment Project (a joint initiative of the South Australian and Australian Governments): UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide for Port Adelaide Enfield and in the above mentioned suburbs of the City of Charles Sturt.
